Two more pilot waste prevention actions on the go
The core of the WASP Tool project concerns the development, application and demonstration of a waste prevention system, the WASP-Tool, aiming at facilitating local authorities during the selection of waste prevention strategies. The tool features a web-based and user-friendly interface, in order to be easily accessible by Local Authorities, and an expert system backend reasoning core, which is employed as a decision-support module to determine and propose the best waste prevention strategies in each case, based on certain criteria.
In October 2013 the selection process of the pilot waste prevention actions was completed. The implementation of the WASP Tool in the Municipalities of Chania, Heraklio and Paralimni, resulted in the selection of two pilot waste prevention actions. According the framework of the WASP Tool project, each participating Local Authority (i.e. ESDAK in Heraklion, DEDISA in Chania and the Municipality of Paralimni) has to implement four waste prevention actions: two pre-selected ones (the first action is about food waste reduction and the second concerns home composting – please refer to Picture 1) and two derived by the results of the WASP-Tool implementation.
The third waste prevention action - common for all municipalities - is a campaign for the elimination of shopping plastic bags through the promotion of reusable bags (Picture 2). The contribution of plastic bags to the generation of plastic waste is significant, and poses great risks for the environment, especially in aquatic ecosystems. Starting in November, the Municipality of Paralimni will distribute 1,000 reusable bags to its residents at a public event, while ESDAK (at the Municipality of Heraklion) will supply the local supermarket chains with 15,000 reusable bags. These supermarket chains have pledged to offer a small discount anytime a citizen uses the reusable bag in order to encourage their use.
The fourth activity differs in each waste management authority according to its waste composition and its priorities. In the Municipality of Chania, DEDISA will set a new type of lending library, the open exchange library, targeting mainly at the paper waste prevention through the exchange of books, and the promotion of social interaction, cultural and educational training. For this purpose, four places in the municipality of Chania (Picture 3,4) have been selected to accommodate the stands of the exchange library, which will remain open to the public 24 hours/day.
In Heraklio a priority waste stream is clothes. Therefore, ESDAK based on the results of the WASP-Tool will set certain spots within the city, where residents will place clothes they don’t need in closed containers. These clothes will be sorted according to their condition, either to reuse (when in good condition) or to shredder (when no longer serve their original purpose), and use as raw materials e.g. for mattress manufacturing.
Finally in Paralimni the pilot waste prevention action aims at reducing the waste from plastic bottles that result from the consumption of bottled water. A campaign has already been launched to raise awareness and inform the citizens while reusable bottles will be distributed to the students of local schools (Picture 5).
The waste prevention actions are funded by the EU within the LIFE10+ project and WASP-TOOL project.
